How to remove from Toilet ?

There is a toilet in the house we are renting that has a residue left over on the dish as a result of leakage from the tank for I presume, many months/years? Its a brownish (calcium) residue and I have tried scrubbing with a brush and normal toilet cleaner and nothing happens. Any ideas of how to get rid of it without replacing the toilet?
