Why is it quiet outside sometimes and sometimes not?

You know how some nights you go outside and it is buzzing with life..and other nights when you go outside it is dead silent, and very eerie. Does it mean predators are about or some sort of disturbance has silenced all the other animals (like crickets, frogs, other night sounds, etc)?
